MISSION

Elko Middle School is a comprehensive middle school in Henrico County Public Schools. We aim to inspire educational excellence among all students in their journey from middle to high school. To achieve our goal, Elko will increase the percentage of students demonstrating proficiency in grade-level content by 10% in ELA, Math, & Science. Elko Middle School will maintain a Chronic Absenteeism rate below 15%.

Cellular Phones and Electronic Devices

HCPS & Elko Middle School recognizes that student access to cell phones, smart watches with cellular service or Wi-Fi, and other electronic devices is common in 21st Century society; however, it is imperative that students and parents/guardians understand that there are appropriate and inappropriate times for the use of such devices.

To ensure a learning environment free from unnecessary disruptions, use of cellular phones, smart watches with cellular service or Wi-Fi, I-Pads, headphones and/or air pods and other unauthorized Electronic Devices are required to be out of visible sight and silenced during scheduled class time, hallways, special events scheduled during the school day. Students may use their phones during lunches, buses, and after school activities unless the coach or sponsor of the program prohibits their use.

Failure to adhere to this policy will result in a minimum consequence of the device being confiscated. Other consequences may apply pending the investigation as to the intent and reason for not adhering to the Code of Student Conduct.

CELL PHONES ACTIONS & CONSEQUENCES

1st Offense: Device confiscated until the end of the school day, verbal warning and

parent/guardian contacted.

2nd Offense: Device confiscated, parent/guardian contacted, and parent/guardian must retrieve the device.

3rd Offense: Device confiscated, parent/guardian must retrieve the device, and school-level consequences shall apply.

4th Offense: Device confiscated, parent/guardian must retrieve the device, school-level consequences shall apply, and student shall be banned from possessing a cell phone and/or electronic device at school for the remainder of the school year.

SCHOOL LUNCHES & FOOD DELIVERIES FOR STUDENTS

Breakfast and lunch are prepared daily for students. These meals are free to all students.

Food deliveries for students will not be allowed this year. Deliveries via Uber, Instacart, etc., will be returned to the sender. Parents or Guardians cannot drop off food from outside vendors (McDonald's, Chic Fil A, etc.) to students at any time during the school day.

BELL SCHEDULE

School Begins at 8:05 and ends at 3:15 pm. Please ensure you do not drop off your student before 8 am.

EARLY DISMISSALS: Our early dismissal cut off time is 2:30 pm. Students will not be called out of class after this time but may be notified that they are a car rider. Car riders are dismissed at 3:15 following the afternoon announcements.

Early Dismissal Reminders:

· The early dismissal cut-off time is 2:30. Students will not be called for early dismissals after this time. If you arrive after 2:30, we will let your student know they are a car rider and they will come down when we dismiss at 3:15.

· Anyone picking a student up for an early dismissal must be listed as a contact in PowerSchool. This can be updated through your Parent Portal account. If someone is not listed in PowerSchool, the student will not be called for early dismissal. Emails for early dismissals will not be accepted.

Elko Counselor's Corner

Address Affidavits

Students who are enrolled at Elko with an address affidavit, must submit address affidavit information every year. This year all address affidavits were due at the beginning of July. Students who do not have a current address affidavit will be withdrawn by mid-September. Please contact our Registrar, Ms. Stacy for more information at tcstacy@henrico.k12.va.us or by calling the Elko School Counseling Office.

Schedule Changes

Schedules are going live on PowerSchool on Monday August 12th at 9:30am. If you notice an error in your student’s schedule, such as they are missing a core class or they are in the wrong level, you can contact your student’s school counselor to notify us. For all other schedule changes our Schedule Change Window will open September 3rd and close September 17th. During this window you will be able to complete a google form requesting a schedule change for your student.
